There are a host of reasons why women and families choose to end their pregnancies early. Some include medical complications that compromise the health of the mother. Sometimes a child will be born with an illness or disability that the family feels is too much to bear. Other times, and most the most common concern I hear of, is the inability for a mother or family to financially and physically support a child. When we desire to see that a mother choose life but then neglect her and the child after the birth, we have made our argument moot. If we are to believe that life is worth saving, we must be willing to sacrifice to see to it that life can be sustained. It means that as the church we must, Must, MUST support fostering and adoption to take care of children whose mothers chose life but couldn't continue to take care of their children. It means investing in families who chose life even when they knew it meant medical complications and sacrifice. It means we MUST support social service programs that provide women and children with food, healthcare, and affordable housing. We can't demand that the mothers sacrifice to bring life into the world and then uphold an unrealistic and unattainable reality of expecting them to be able to change their circumstances on their own. Today, we pray for the orphans currently waiting for forever families. We pray for widows, but also include the single mothers who live as widows and have been abandoned by the fathers of their children. We pray over our role in taking care of orphans and widows in their distress.
Lord,
I confess that the idea of adopting and fostering is scary and intimidating. I ask that you would continue to soften our family's heart and prepare us to bring children into our home. I ask that I would learn to be generous with my money to help support the children and families around me who need help. I pray that I would use the blessing that is democracy to help utilize our country's resources to help provide social services to families so that they never have to choose between pregnancy termination and life due to financial circumstances. I pray that single mothers would be surrounded by the church to help bring their children up, both financially and spiritually. I pray that our churches would become a place of refuge for widows and orphans. I pray that they would seek our help first. I pray that we would keep ourselves from being polluted by the world; that we would see the church in America disassociate with political ideologies that they have falsely tied to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I ask that we would raise our children to know true, pure, and faultless religion and that as a family we would seek the restoration of your kingdom here on earth. Thy will be done Lord, on earth, as it is in heaven.
Amen
